Introduction

Jakarta : Train station in Tanjung Priok harbour

The Railway station opened in 1925. The structural assembled steel constructions of the beautiful canopy were manufactured by the 'Braat Steel construction industries' settled in Soerabaja (Surabaya)
Here, in Tandjung Priok harbour, the large passenger boats arrived and in time a large number of (mostly) Dutch- and European families flowed in (or repatriated). After passing customs, they took the train to Batavia city. How different it is nowadays, no crowd or passengers, no trains anymore it's all silence here. The function, as an international hub, has long been taken over by air traffic- and airports. It feels like a strange sensation being here, on your own in complete emptiness. The impressive hall is waiting for something what maybe never comes. One does not know what to do with this industrial monument; it may probably disappear vanishing in history.

Since the middle of the nineteen forties, the old city functioned as centre of the excessively enlarged town area. Hanging in its outdated dilapidated infrastructure as: the imperfect and small roads lacking public parking facilities, a public transport system dating back to the fifties; water- and electricity supplies outdated with an unsatisfactory capacity. This all is not unknown. The old town, traditionally facilitating employment and distribution of goods is subject to a process of continuous extravagant changes, which are hardly systematically supervised and equipped.
